Qrytext: My gr. gr. gr. grandfather was General John Murray, (1739-
1824), Admimistrator of Cape Breton 1799-1800. (He is NOT the same
General who was Governor of Canada.)
He has an entry in the "Dictionary of Canadian Biography", which states
that nothing was known of him after he left Canada. I do know that he
was married a second time in England, was in France, and became a hostage
of Napoleon.
Does anyone know about his tenure in Cape Breton? Are there any church
records available at that time? Does anyone need more information about
him for Cape Breton history? Thank you. Margaret

attack to learn the news that all her sons perished in the war. Dougall
past away years before from a logging accident that broke his back. Angus
married Mary Helen McIntyre, daugther of Isadore and Bridgette Martina
McIntyre{Bates}. Isadore is the son of Daniel[Dan the Piper]McIntyre and
Mary Morrison born April 1901. Bridgette Martina Bates was born in
Bateston or Batestown outside of Louisburg, parents unknown, date of
birth unknown. This is all I know of my families history, if anyone can
shed more light for me please do so. Also to mention Mary MacKinnon had a
brother by the name of John Joe MacPhee who ran a small store in Hay
Cove, Richmond County, until the early 1980's

Qrytext: I am looking for information on MacEacherns from Broad Cove
Marsh or Glenville. My grandfather was an Alexander MacEachern, son of
James MacEachern (carpenter) and Mary MacLellan. James built a home in
Glenville. His father Donald was married to a Katy MacDonald and he
lived in Broad Cove Marsh. I am trying to find any other relatives who
can tell me where we came from in Scotland and when we arrived in N.S.
Donald and Katy had another son, Alexander who was the father of Rev.
Malcolm MacEachern, Bishop of Charlottetown, PEI. I think Donald came to
N.S. with his parents and siblings - up to 10 or 11 of them. Some went
to Antigonish and some to Port Hood, but that's all I have been able to
get - census info makes me think Donalds father was Iain and that he died
before 1837 as it shows a Mrs. John McEachern living near Donald. Donald
was born in Scotland in 1806, but his wife was from N.S. They were R.C.
If anyone has info I would be indebted.

MCDONALD, WHYNACHT
NOTE: County: Cape Breton
Qrytext: Liverpool
Advance July 3rd 1941 - MCDONALD - "At Robinson's Nursing Home on June
25th to Mrs. and the late Alex McDonald, Sydney, a son 7.5 pounds".
It was late winter of 1941 when a lady by the name of Mary McDonald
showed up in Liverpool, Queens County, Nova Scotia. She appeared to be in
her early twenties at the time. She had black hair, blue eyes, and a very
intense laugh. She was almost in tears each time she laughed. We don't
believe she had any older children nor did she ever mention anything
about having any other children. It was said that she was from Cape
Breton. No one ever found out what her maiden was. It was said that she
worked as a nurse. She was several months pregnant and she said her
husband died of tuberculoses. She said she had two or three sisters and a
brother who was a priest in Cape Breton. She was a Catholic so she went
to the parish priest and asked him if he knew of a place where she could
stay. The name of the priest at St. Gregory's Parish at that time was
Father Thomas Delaney and he was the same priest who would perform the
wedding for my parents 25 years later. He knew of a lady named Mary
Whynacht who took in boarders because Mary was also a Catholic and
attended the church on a regular basis. Mary Whynacht's son Hughey and
his wife Kathleen often visited her and they met Mary McDonald during one
of the visits. Through conversing with her, they found out she was
expecting a baby shortly and that the father of her baby had died.
When Mary McDonald gave birth to her son, she named him George Byron
McDonald. Mary said that she could not take her baby back to Cape Breton
with her cause there was a story about some contagious disease in the
family. She had asked Hughey and Kathleen if they could take care of her
baby at their home in Sandy Cove and she would send money every month to
help pay for his care. This continued for several months but eventually
she stopped sending them money every month. Since Hughey and Kathleen
were taking care of the baby for several months now, they were growing
very attached to him and wanted to keep him and raise him as their own
son. One day Kathleen received a letter in the mail from Mary McDonald
and Kathleen got very upset and thought that Mary was coming back for her
son. As it turned out Mary wanted to know if Hughey and Kathleen would
adopt her son. They did and it was a private adoption between the two
parties. Hughey and Kathleen were going to rename him but Hughey's mother
Mary Whynacht, convinced them not to. My father was placed with Hughey
and Kathleen on July 15, 1941 and the adoption order was granted on
November 26, 1942.
My father believes he may have seen his biological mother on a few
occasions during the 1950's when he was working at the old Irving Oil gas
station in Mill Village when Jordan Baker was running it. She was quite
friendly with him but she never said that she was his mother. He thinks
she re-married and was living in Halifax during the 1960's. We don't know
what the name of her second husband was if she did re-marry. We're not
sure if she's still alive. There has yet to be any type of official
contact between my father and any member of his biological family.

MCDONALD, WHYNACHT - Updated Adoption Story
NOTE: County: Cape
Breton
Qrytext: Liverpool Advance July 3rd 1941 - MCDONALD - "At
Robinson's Nursing Home on June 25th to Mrs. and the late Alex McDonald,
Sydney, a son 7.5 pounds".
It was late winter of 1941 when a lady by the name of Mary McDonald
showed up in Liverpool. She appeared to be in her late twenties at the
time. She had black hair, blue eyes, and a very intense laugh. She was
almost in tears each time she laughed. We don't believe she had any older
children nor did she ever mention anything about having any other
children. It was said that she was from Cape Breton. No one ever found
out what her maiden was. It was said that she worked as a nurse. She was
several months pregnant and she said her husband or a brother died of
tuberculoses. She said she had two or three sisters and an uncle who was
a priest in Cape Breton. The name of this priest was quite common and
well-known at the time. She was a Catholic so she went to the parish
priest and asked him if he knew of a place where she could stay. The name
of the priest at St. Gregory's Parish at that time was Father Thomas
Delaney and he was the same priest who would perform the wedding for my
parents 25 years later. He knew of a lady named Mary Whynacht who took in
boarders because Mary was also a Catholic and attended the church on a
regular basis. Mary Whynacht's son Hughey and his wife Kathleen often
visited her and they met Mary McDonald during one of the visits. Through
conversing with her, they found out she was expecting a baby shortly and
that the father of her baby had died.
When Mary McDonald gave birth to her son, she named him George Byron
McDonald. Mary said that she could not take her baby back to Cape Breton
with her because of the tuberculosis in her family. She had made
arrangements for him to be boarded some place in Milton, but when Hughey
and Kathleen learned about this, they asked if they could take care of
her baby at their home in Sandy Cove. Mary McDonald agreed to this and
she sent them money every month to help pay for his care. This continued
for several months but eventually she stopped sending them money every
month. Since Hughey and Kathleen were taking care of the baby for several
months now, they were growing very attached to him and wanted to keep him
and raise him as their own son. One day Kathleen received a letter in the
mail from Mary McDonald and Kathleen got very upset and thought that Mary
was coming back for her son. As it turned out Mary wanted to know if
Hughey and Kathleen would adopt her son. They did and it was a private
adoption between the two parties. Hughey and Kathleen were going to
rename him but Hughey's mother Mary Whynacht, convinced them not to. My
father was placed with Hughey and Kathleen on July 15, 1941 and the
adoption order was granted on November 26, 1942.
IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS OR HAS SOME HELPFUL TIPS ON HOW
TO SEARCH FOR INFORMATION, I ENCOURAGE THEM TO CONTACT EITHER MY FATHER
OR ME PLEASE.

Well, I guess this is really strange. My grandfather's headstone says
"Lawrence J LeBlanc"
It seems that his family knew him as Lawrence but his regiment number
lists him as Laurent Leon LeBlanc
(http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gpc009/459273a.gif).
Did a quick search and came up with this:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-
bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=tleblanc&id=I0503. The Laurent LeBlanc listed here
matches the information that is listed on the Archives.ca website. I
definitely will have to check with other relatives (especially the older
ones) to see if they know anything.
When I talked to my father, he did not know any of his father's relatives
(or even the names of them). I wonder how Laurent ended up in Minto, New
Brunswick when it seems the rest of the relatives stayed in Margaree,
Nova Scotia? Maybe his marriage certificate might shed some light on this
- was probably married in the early/mid 1920's (my father was born in
1935, his oldest brother is 10 years older). I don't believe my
grandmother is from originally from Minto
(http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/NBCemeteries/Details.aspx?L=EN&Key=46635).
Would anyone have any more details on the children of Laurent and Marie-
Anne LeBlanc (http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-

Qrytext: I am visiting Cape Breton for a few days in October and
would like to find the home where my father was brought up, and meet
anyone who knew of the family. The postal address was RR#1 River Denys
Station, Inverness County. His name was Alfred Dudley Cotterill. He was
sent from England with his older brother, from an Emigration home in
Birmingham, England in 1916.
He was adopted by a farming family at the address above. Their name was
MacIntyre. His adopted mother was, I believe, called Sarah Bell before
her marriage. I am not sure about her husbands name. They had one son
of their own who was called Archie Donald MacIntyre, who ran the farm
after their death. Their mother died in the late 1940's. Their father
had died earlier.
My father's brother didn't stay in Canada, but my Dad stayed until the
second world war when he joined the Canadian Army. He came to England
and married my mother, Lillian. I was born in 1943 and named after
someone from his home called Barbara. He said ahe was a cousin, and spoke
fondly of her. I have twin sisters, Sandra and Sheila who were born in
1947.
My Dad returned to Nova Scotia when he was discharged from the army in
Sydney, NS, on 17th October 1941. It was always his intention to take us
all back to his home, but it never happened.
Archie continued to farm and to write to us, until he was shot sometime
in the 1950's, in some sort of dispute at the farm.
I would apprecite any help in locating the farm and anyone who knows
anything about the family.

Sylvester Burke. He was born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton on, I'm pretty
sure, November 3, 1934. He was last seen some time in the 80's. He was
know to travel, including to the states. He was the son of Bessie and
Benny Burke of #2, Glace Bay. He was brother to Sis, Mary, Ambrose,
Veronica, Martha, Marcella, Dolly and my grandmother Teresa. I have never
met him, but have heard so much about him that I would really love to
meet him or atleast talk to him. PLEASE HELP! My grandmother's health is
now failing and she would desperately love to see him before she dies.
If you have any info, please contact me.
I am also searching for my family history on my grandmothers side. She
was an Irish Burke (b. Glace Bay-#2). Her father was Benjamin Leo Burke
(b. ~1885) in Main A Dieu (parents - Jane Wadden and ? Burke). Her mother

parents, they were Joseph EDWARDS and Flora MCDOUGAL, they were married

Ann (unknown), Flora's parents were Neil MCDOUGAL and Christie MCCUISH,
it seems that Joseph EDWARDS jr and Flora MCDOUGAL were both born in
Little Bras D'Or between 1850 and 1854. My puzzle now is ... what
happened to Joseph & Flora, that they don't appear on the 1891 census and
their two youngest children Alec and Joseph end up 25 miles away living
with different families? Alec was with the MACDONALD's and Joseph with
two KENNEDY sisters, Mrs MACDONALD was nee KENNEDY and was sister to the
other two, however, I cannot find another KENNEDY connection to the
EDWARDS'. The three older EDWARDS childern Mary Ann, Margaret Jane and
Florence all but disappear, one of them may have gone to the USA and may
have worked on one of the ASTOR estates (family

1. What are the sources used by A.D. MacDonald for Mabou Pioneers? Are
they Cape Breton sources? How might I go about finding them?
2. Were Cape Breton Islanders of Highland descent in the habit of using
non-gaelic names amongst non-gaelic speakers in the mid 19th century? Was
Daniel a common substitution for Donald?

Qrytext: My
sister and I have started to try and follow and create a family tree as
the people are really starting to dwindle down. And we would like to
make this available to future additions to the tree while we can. We
have alot of names but are missing some key information. We are trying to
locate information on the MacLeod side of our family. We have a few
names, but now with ALL of the MacLeods passed in the family it is very
hard. What we do know is that our Grandfather, Charles Alexander MacLeod
born 1888-89 and passed away in 1959. He was a coal mine cop in Glace
Bay. He married Florence Maude Caines and they had three children,
Allister (d 2002) Lorna (d 2004) and Charles (our dad b 1940 d 2001).
Our Grandfather had 3 bothers that we know of, Archibald (could have also
gone gone by John A), Dan and Ralph. We believe that the family
originated in Scotland but not too sure when the family moved to Canada
to Cape Breton. We think the family came on the Ship "The Mayflower" but
are not too clear on that. Also looking for information on Clements
family roots. Our Great Granparents Ellen Leblanc and Charles(Charlie)
Clements. And also any informatin on our Great Grandparents Johnathan
Caines and Martha Champion. If anyone can help us fill in some blanks it
would be more then greatly appreciated. We would like to document what
we can for all the little ones coming into the family. And so many of
our branches have already passed on. Thanks and God
Bless.....
