Qrytext: Rev. David Hickey, born 1843 at Indian River, PEI, was a Methodist minister. His wife was Annie Lockhart. He is believed to have served at a church in the North Sydney area. I do not know when he may have arrived, or how long he may have stayed in Cape Breton. He possibly went on to Yarmouth. By the early 1930's, he was at Barrington, NS. He died in Massachusetts in the late 1930's. One child of his was possibly a Frank W. Hickey born circa 1879 at North Sydney. He may have had at least two other children - D. Harold and Florence, birth-dates and places unknown. Florence had a child circa 1900, so she may have been born ca. 1875 or so. I would like to make contact with anyone who might have some information on this family. Or, I would appreciate any leads towards Methodist churches in the Sydney/North Sydney area where David Hickey might have served as minister.

Qrytext: I am looking for information on family of John Cameron GILLIS. He was born in 1845 or 1846 in Cape Breton(Georges River according to some older family members). Sometime in the 1870s he moved to Moncton, N.B. He was a moulder in the local foundry and very involved in the Moncton Fire Dept. His first wife(that I know of) was Emma Preston. I have no info on her at all. His second wife, Blanche Graves, was my great grandmother. John belonged to IOOF and Orange Lodge. He was Presbyterian. He died in 1902. Any info on his family would be very much appreciated. g

They died in their thirties in North Sydney but I can't find any dates or places of burial. I am the descendant of their oldest daughter Sarah (Sadie). After their deaths, their two oldest children were raised by their grandmother Susan (Roper) Jackson and the two youngest children were raised by their mother's brother and his wife James and Lizzie Hardy of Igonish. Matilda was "fostered" to a family by the name of Newton, the Newton's at some point returned to England ( when Matilda was 9 / 10 yrs) taking Matilda with them. My gg g'mother always believed that she was part North American Indian and that the Binney family was in some way connected to her - she reffered to them as "aunt " and "uncle" - Any info would be greatly appreciated - Thanks

Qrytext: OBITUARY: The North Sydney Hearld 30 Nov 1881: Mr. John Nicholson of Sporting Mountain. Died 14 Nov 1881. Born Loch Atoll, Rosshire, Scotland 1805. Came to Cape Breton with his father in the Brig "St. Nicholas", landing in St. Peter's in 1820 and settled at East of West Bay, then known as St. George's Channel. He is survived by his wife Jemima MacKay. They were married in 1826 by the celebrated Mr. McDonald, the first Presbyterian Minister who visited that part of the county. Mr. Nicholson sold his farm at West Bay and moved to Sporting Mountain about 30 years ago. He was for many years an elder of the Presbyterian Congregation at West Bay. Just thought this might be of some interest to people doing the Nicholson or MacKay's from Sporting Mountain, Richmond co., Cape Breton.

Great Great grandparents were George Burchell b. 1/6/1828 and Mary Ann Oram from Sydney Mines. They were married 3/17/1851. Their children were William (my great grandfather) b. 9/17/1853, Franklin b. 1855, John b. 2/16/1857, Susan b. 7/3/1858 d. 1/18/1862, Peter b. 9/6/1860 d. 3/17/1851, and Susan II b. 7/17/1862. George died 3/22/1864. All this information was written in famly Bible at appropriate times. My great grandfather married Janet Hunter Caldwell (daughter of Allan Caldwell and Martha Anderson, also of Sydney Mines)in Boston and they lived their all their lives. They had two children, my grandfather George Allan Burchell and a daughter Edith Caldwell Burchell Goodwin. I have a letter written by Allan Caldwell to William Burchell in 1889 saying that he sees George Oram every day. I am assuming this is Mary Ann's father or brother. Does anyone know how this Burchell family connects with other Burchells in the area?

At some point she came to Massachusetts, and had a son(my father) at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on March 30, 1916. The father was listed on the birth certificate as Ralph Smith, a farmer in Saugus, Massachusetts. The son, my father, was raised in Saugus, Massachusetts by Fred Corson on Vine Street. My father's name was Paul Corson. On his birth certificate he was listed as Baby Smith. There is a picture of my father, as a very small boy, with Margaret Morrison. So, she was with him for at least a little while after his birth. But, then there is no other information. She may have died(although no death record could be found for her in Massachusetts), or have left him for some reason and gone back to Cape Breton. This is a shot in the dark, but I'm hoping someone, somewhere, may know something about this story, or have some information. Since my father was born in 1916, Margaret may have been born around the turn of the century, or earlier. Saugus, the town which is listed as the father's residence, is just North of Boston, and next to Lynn, Massachusetts. Thanks to anyone who knows anything about this, Sincerely, Marilyn Cleveland

Qrytext: I am looking for info on my ggrandfather Philip MCDONALD born about 1849. His marriage certificate lists "Cape Breton" as place of birth. Oral family tradition says he came from Inverness County, but can find no mention of him in MacDougall's "History of Inverness County" other than that he married Catherine McLean. His father is listed as "Daniel McDonald" and mother "Kate McInnis". A family living in St. Peter's, Richmond County, in the 1871 census is a possibility. Philip immigrated to Gloucester MA in 1878. Capt of the Martha and Susan, he was lost at sea in 1894. Thanks so much for any help!

The guard whose duty it was to watch him during the night ... fell asleep and, taking advantage of him, Frances MacGregor disarmed the rebel soldier and escaped to his own lines, taking with him the short sword and sabre. These he was allowed to retain and he was promoted to the rank of Sergent. The two weapons now in my possession are over a hundred years old. ( The weapons are now located in War Musuem in Halifax, N.S) McGregor, Francis - Priv. - Res. Lowell; 38; carpenter; enl and must. April 2, 1862; re-enlist. March 24, 1864; wounded Oct. 19, 1864, Cedar Creek, Va.; must. out July 5, 1866, as Sergt. My grandfather (John Daniel Campbell) was born in Nova Scotia in 1872 (Catholic). My grandmother (Amanda Beaton) was also born in Nova Scotia in 1877. (Catholic) The both immigrated to the Noank, Conn. area, where they were married. My grandfather built whaling ships, in Mystic, Conn., His brother Allen also move to Noank Conn. and became a ship captain. I know my grandfather had 4 brothers: Allen, Rodney, Angus, and Charles and may have had sisters: Tina Mac Donald, Kate Bates, Mame De Veroux? and an adopted brother Larry? I was told his father was injured in a sea accident and lost the use of his legs, he became a school teacher in Nova Scotia. My father told me they were from the Mabou. But it could of been from around that area because he also mentioned the Brass D'Or lakes area. My grandmother, had 2 sister Anna Beaton Murphy and one named Lilia Beaton and a brother James Beaton. Her mother's name was Mother's name was Catherine. She also had 2 other brothers that were lost at sea. I don't know their names. Unfortunately that's all I have managed to pull up from records in the family bible and my recollections of what my father and aunt told me. Both are dead now.
