CADEGAN, LEE, MCLAUGHLIN, ROACH, ROHANE posted by Noreen Rose on Sunday, June 3, 2001

I haven't posted a message in quite awhile, so I thought I would give it another try. My ggrandfather Dennis CADEGAN (CADIGAN, CADOGAN), b. 1801 in Ireland, possibly Clear Island, County Cork, came to Glace Bay, Cape Breton with his brothers Patrick and James sometime before 1838, possibly through Newfoundland. Dennis m. Bridget ROACH around 1842. Bridget was b. 1814 in Canada, and d. there 1891. Her parents were Thomas ROACH, from Fethard, Tipperary, and Anne LEE. Dennis d. 1866 in Nova Scotia. His son Edward, my grandfather, moved to Steubenville, Ohio and m. Catherine MCLAUGHLIN, daughter of Patrick and Catherine ROHANE. I would like to know if Dennis, Patrick and James CADEGAN actually came from Clear Island, County Cork. Who were their parents? When and where did they arrive in Canada? I would appreciate any info available. Noreen Rose

BARRON, COTIE, SAMPSON posted by Debbi Wilson on Saturday, June 16, 2001

This is more just for information sake. This coming August, on the weekend of the 17th, 18th and 19th, the descendants of Dan Cotie from Grand Greve, will be gathering for a reunion in St. Peter's. This is the 2nd reunion as one was held in 1983. Approximately 150 relations will be gathering to celebrate the family. I have researched the family tree back to the mid 1600's and at the reunion a "book" will be available. This is a "homespun" project that I have compiled as a tribute to my grandparents, Dan Cotie and Elizabeth Barron. If anyone is interested in this area please feel free to contact me.

posted by Laura Paquet on Monday, June 18, 2001

I'm writing with an unusual query, but I'm hoping someone on this list might be able to help me. I'm a freelance magazine writer based in Ottawa, and I'm working on a short article for a U.S. magazine about the Cape Breton practice of "styling"--giving people nicknames based on their parents or other ancestors, or on something they've done. For instance, the "Storekeeper MacDonalds" might have been nicknamed for a forebear who ran the local store, while "Betty Robert Lizzie Inverness McGill" might bear the name of both her father and grandmother, as well as the place her ancestors came from. If anyone on the list has a nickname like this, knows someone who does or has ever done research into this practice, I would love to hear from you sometime before June 25, 2001. Please e-mail me at (laura@cornerstoneword.com). Thanks very much in advance for any help you can provide. Sincerely, Laura Byrne Paquet

HENRY posted by ed nissen on Saturday, June 23, 2001

Henry, Helen L(?), believed to have traveled from Nova Scotia to Dutchess Co., NY, ca. 1870s, possibly with relative Martha HENRY. In 1880 US census she is reported in Dutchess Co., New York, age 28, married to Isaac Sisson. They had 1 son, Jacob, age 1 (born March 1879). Martha was married to Lemuel Sisson. The census reports her as age 40, so they may be sisters, or other relatives. Neither Lemuel nor Isaac were reported in the 1870 census as married. Any information about Helen's date, place of birth, parentage will be appreciated.

Still searching for info on Phillip McLeod,born,1871,Boulardarie,Cape Breton and married Sarah(Sadie)Sutherland b.june 10 1884,Lorway Mines,Cape Breton. They were married Aug.15 1907 in Sydney at the Presbyterian Church. Phillip's parent were Phillip and Mary, with brothers,Rod,John and sisters Johanna,A Mary, and Catherine. The marriage record at the Beaton Center shows that Phillip was living in Sydney Mines,Cape Breton when the marriage took place. Sadie was the daughter of John and Christie with a brother Neil. The Sutherland's are listed in the 1901 census living in the Glace Bay,Cape Breton area. I contacted a local researcher a while back and she suggested that the Mcleods might be from the Mill Pond/Point Aconi,Cape Breton area. The 1881 Cape Breton County,Boularderie census lists Phillip and his family without his father,Phillip. Could someone give me an idea what cemetery Phillip, senior, might have been buried in? Thanks for any assistance. Neil Sutherland.Calgary,Alberta

MACLEOD, MCLEOD posted by Linda Ann Hirtle on Friday, June 29, 2001

Looking for correct information: I have a Colin MacLeod b. ca. 1875 s/o Murdoch and Christy MacMillan of Seaview, marrying a Mary Jane Sutherland b. July 7th, 1874 d/o William and Margaret Sutherland, at Point Tupper Methodist Church Dec. 12, 1899. But in "Settlers of the Southside" by Katherine Easthouse she talks of a Murdoch MacLeod and his wife Christian Urquhart d/o Donald Urquhart whose son Colin married a Sutherland girl from Seaview. The dates seem abit out as the oldest son Kenneth's birth was 1838 and according to Katherine, this Murdoch and Christian had 5 sons and 3 daughter's. Are these two different families?
