MACNEIL, STEELE posted by David Carberry on Thursday, June 1, 2000

Margaret (nee MacNeil) Steele born circa 1875 on Boulendrie Island. Died in her 90's around the late 60’s early 70’s after complications from a leg amputation. Buried at St-Anthony’s RC Parish Children : Mickey, Alex, Danny, Collin, Catherine Mae, James, Mary Elizabeth, Hugh (dies at 16 in mines) and Hugh.

STEELE posted by David Carberry on Thursday, June 1, 2000

Alex Steele's father, Peter Steele, dies when he is young which forces him to go into the mines around the late 1850’s early 60’s. He never learns to read nor write. He loses contact with his relatives in Boisdale. His first two wives die during child birth. He then marries at 37 a Margaret MacNeil of 16 years from Boularderie and she bears 14 children. He seems to always have had white hair. He always claimed that the Steele’s came from Co. Kildare in Ireland, and that there was a connection with his family and horses. His uncle was grandfather to Father Harvey Steele. As well there was a John Steele who owned all of Steele’s hill in the beginning and of whom he was somehow related.

Hi....my query is regarding the name of a church loated in Sydney, Whitney Peir to be more specific. My great-grandparents came to Cape Breton from Italy. I was told that they (especially my great- grandmother) attended mass at an Italian Church known as St. Nicholas (spelling?). I was told by my aunt that there was a fire there and she was not sure if it was destroyed. I would like to know first, if this is the correct name for the church, and second does it still exist? If it was destroyed by fire, were all the records destroyed with it. My aunt also said that the church was run by a Father Dentino. Thanks for your help. .

MABOU posted by Keith Grant on Friday, June 23, 2000

Hello folks! I would be pleased to hear from anyone with any knowledge of a Baptist Church that was once active in Mabou. The congregation was established in 1829, and seems to have lost visibility around 1921. The church was located at the site of the small Glendyr Rd. cemetery (the foundation is still visible), though it seems the building was at one point moved and turned into a house. The families buried in the Glenyer cemetery, and I assume, among the active members, were chiefly CLARK, FRIZZLE, GIBSON, IRISH, McLEOD, POTTER, PUSHEE and SMITH. Even the smallest tidbit, story, photo or rumour will be helpful at this point. Thanks!

posted by Keith Grant on Friday, June 23, 2000

Hello folks! There was once a Baptist Church active in Port Morien (Cow Bay), organized around 1870. A building was constructed very near to St. Paul's. It was sold in 1922-23 to a local society, and may have been torn down sometime during the 1930's. There is scant information available on the story of this congregation, so again, any stories, hints, rumours, photos, or further contacts, will be very helpful. Thank you! .
