Hi all, I'm trying to find out what happened to my great-grandfather's half-sister. Her name was Eliza Matilda Kate BAGNELL. She was born 10 MAY 1893 in Gabarus and was sent to live with a SUTHERLAND family in Glace Bay when her mother died shortly after she was born. It is said that Eliza married a man by the last name of CURRAN. I have been unsuccessful in trying to trace this lady and would welcome any info and/or leads. Thanks!

The following letter has been in the posession of the Campbell family of Boularderie, Victoria County for sometime. In addition to the interesting comments on life in the early days it also contains several references to family members and others. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who could provide additional information about Donald and Barbara (MCKAY) CAMPBELL and their families.
The letter is from Donald CAMPBELL to his brother-in-law Hugh MCKAY in Scotland
Letter dated: October 7th 1830, Bras d'Or Lake,
My Dear sir --I wrote you two or three letters since I came here but never had the pleasure of receiving an answer to either of them whether they arrived or not - is more than what I can say --
I now write you again acquainting you that myself and the rest of my family is in perfect good health, hoping this will find you in the same manner - as well as the rest of your family - Thank God I am pleased for coming to this country as I find myself quite easy, having occupied land called my own free from all burdens whatsoever I go out and in at my pleasure no soul living forces me to do a turn against my will, no lairds no factors here no rents nor any tacksman work but what I do for myself -
I fell my wood in winter during the snow time which is very deep here in the winter season but still not quite as cold as it is represented no doubt the winter is severe with hard frosts, seas and lakeshore frozen two or three feet thick in the ice, and we can travel upon the ice through all the lakes upon? the coach and at times very dangerous, but at the same time I can work in the wood felling trees without my coat on. The weather is almost always dry and clear with hard frosts - the snow sets in Jany and off in May You will not see a sight of the ground during that time but white with snow very deep not a drop of rain during winter, but the snow gives way with the heat of the sun.
It would take me ten sheets to let you know fully the nature of this country - what you and others would want to know is this. This country is good for poor people produces good crop of potatoes, oats, wheat, barley, and anything you think proper to sow or plant - in summer the weather is mild and pleasant the climate more warmer than with you at home, the first year we came here we went through many hardships for want of provisions for our support, but we had some help from the Government but now we are better off. We have plenty of potatoes and oats to our wish? and in a short time we will be pretty well off, not to say we can get any money here No! Money is very scarce here, but those that has it gets any thing they wants. It is a great pity that you did not come along with me, as you would have land near me but now occupied by others, land near the sea is getting scarce here but plenty lots a little distance from the sea is equally good if not better - you a entitled to 200 acres, if single 100 acres - I wish you would still think of coming here I know it would be better for you than being at Tun--? or in any part of the Lewis or Harris - you could have lands here for ever for yourself and children for ever without any compensation whatsoever only paying surveying and Grants in all near £20 and most likely you pay the Grant 20 years hence. Should you come I will give you a house/home? any part of what I have til you find a place to your wish? or should you stop upon my land for ever you are quite welcome - If you come mind bring with you a good store of wool, clothes, leather, herring nets, and lines, big saw, and every other articles you can, or if you have not the spirit to come send me one of your herring nets for/or? -- fishing is plentyful here any person having plenty of fishing materials, is sure of fishing well, here - your sister desires you and her Mother to send her some wool if you dont come yourself. We have an excellent house here and we are quite happy for coming here. Barbara is well pleased for coming but she regrets much she wont see her Parents or you or ever hear from you - John, and Alexander is is now a fine child altho very poorly when you saw her last - We lost a child, a girl since we came here, and Barbara is now pregnant -
I write you as fully as I can but paper is getting short so I must conclude with the best respects to you all your family, in which my wife joins - she entreats you to come here and work? I would be very happy you could come - but if you come mind to bring what I mention otherwise you will find it a want - I remain Dear Sir,
Yours Truly,[signed] Donald CAMPBELL
I wrote you Donald MCLEOD twice I cannot --? nothing of him nor what is he about young Donald MORRISON would answer with him and he would D MCLEOD [??] If I had a good herring net here I might catch plenty herring and mangrels you cannot believe how good this place is for putting? of you sir any vessel direct from Stornoway bound for here, mind send the net DC When you write address

"Fast Eddy" has been a mystery to us and we would really like to find a connection, a family for our Great Grandfather. In various census material he states he is French, a carpenter, RC although his religion seems to change with each wife.
