CLARKE posted by Frances Kemp on Monday, December 1, 1997

I am seeking information on my great-grandmother, Rachael Clarke who married James Knox, a soldier in the British army in 1850. The marriage took place in Cape Breton and was performed by the Rev. Jerimiah Jost, Wesleyan Missionary. I can find no information on Rachael. Census records state she was born in England. Does anyone include a Rachael Clarke among his/her ancestors. Gratefully, Frances Kemp

MACINTOSH posted by Norma Day on Monday, December 1, 1997

I am seeking information on my great-great grandparents,Norman MacIntosh & Christy MacNeil. She was the daughter of John Brown MacNeil. The couple lived in West Bay, MacIntosh Mountain and when widowed per census 1871 Christy was in St.Peter's. I have their marriage date from Arichat on Aug.23,1845. In particular, I am seeking their birth dates, and Norman's parentage. By my estimates he should have been born in Nova Scotia. It appears the only one of their children to have remained in the area was my g.grandfather, John, who settled in Millville. Possible a brother Angus stayed in St.Peter's area. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. nday@highlander.cbnet.ns.ca

JOHNSON posted by Diane (Johnson) Hayman on Thursday, December 4, 1997

My great grandparents were John )and Flora (Mac Kay) Johnson who lived in Lake Ainslie. My grandfather John Louis and his sisters Mary, Maryann, Marcella and brother Daniel, I believe, were all born there. My grt grandparents then moved to Westville, Pictou Co. where they are buried. He died in Cape Breton at St. Patrick's Channel enroute home from visiting his daughters I believe. The newspaper clipping also said he had gone to see about filing a claim in connection with the Fenian Raid bounties, whatever that was! I have made some contacts with relatives in the Sydney area, but I am interested in going back further than I can I wonder who my great great grandparents were, and if they had come from Scotland to Cape Breton, or what. Would there be any church records at Broad Cove, where my grt. grandparents were married in March 1863 or 1864 (John James and Flora(Mac Kay) Johnson. Thanks for any help you may give me. Sincerely Diane Hayman

MACDERMITT, MACDONALD, MACKENZIE, MACKINNON, MACLEOD, MORRISON posted by Donna E. B. Wright on Friday, December 5, 1997

Hello,
I've been researching my grandmother, Effie (MacLeod) MacKenzie's family ties. Her parents raised her, her five sisters Rachel, Katherine, Margaret, Bessie, and Christena and one brother Norman on King Grove Road in Millville, Boularderie, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia their youngest child, Angus died the same year he was born. Her parents Roderick "Rory" MacLeod (born 1854 died 1927) and Katherine (Morrison) MacLeod (born 1865 died 1938) where reported to be related to the MacKinnons, I just don't know which one of them.
I found a letter written to my grandmother by her sister, Christena in 1950 talking about their Great-Grandmother MacDermitt being born a MacKinnon. I have no dates, locations, or names. I know this is an impossible puzzle until I work out the details but does anyone recognize some of these names? If so I'd be thrilled to hear from you.

FRASER, ROSS, URQUHART posted by Tom Aitchison on Friday, December 5, 1997

I would very much like to contact someone who is researching their Cape Breton roots, in the St. George's Channel / The Points / West Bay / Sporting Mountain and Cross Roads area in Richmond County. My great grandfather JOHN URQUHART was born in 1821 at CrossRoads.
(His parents DONALD URQUHART and CHRISTINE FRASER came from Ferintosh on The Black Isle, Ross-shire ,(where they were married), arrived in Sydney in 1817, and settled in the St. George's Channel area.)
JOHN URQUHART married a CHRISTINA ROSS about 1842, probably in Grand River. They had three children in Cape Breton, and in 1851, moved to Bruce Twp., Bruce Co., Ontario.
If any of this is familiar to anyone, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks. Tom Aitchison

My great-grandparents, Roderick "Rory" MacLeod b. 1854 - d 1927 & Katherine Elizabeth? Morrison MacLeod b. 1865 - d. 1938 have proven to be a bit of a mystery to me. Their daughter, Christena wrote to my grandmother, Effie telling her that their great-grandmother MacDermitt had been born a MacKinnon. Unfortunately she didn't mention anything else that might have given me a clue as to whether she was Roderick or Katherine's grandmother. Does anyone recognize these people? If so, I'd be thrilled to hear from you.
Roderick & Katherine Morrison MacLeod's children where:
Rachel, Mrs. John MacLeod
Katherine, Mrs. Harold Learned
Margaret, Mrs. Jim Wilkie
Bessie, Mrs. Rudolph Klostermeier
