DELESKIE posted by Ron DeLeskie on Monday, March 10, 1997

My great grandfather came to Cape Breton in 1866 and settled with a McLellan family in Mainadieu. The 1871 census shows him living with Ann McLellan and family. He married Isobel McLellan and settled in Catalone district. We are trying to trace the proper spelling of our family name. His name as shown in 1871 is John Elaskie in 1881 as John Delesque in 1891 as John Deleskie and, in 1892 as John J. DeLiskie. My great grandfather is shown as coming from France but the 1871 census shows him as coming from the isle of Jersey. My question is how do I trace hime back to Jersey or France? He was born in 1848 (?) and arrived in Cape Breton in 1866 at the age of 16 (?). How do I get ships' lists from Jersey for that period ? I'm at a dead end in my research and would welcome any help.
